From The Pastor

Our mission trip to northern Illinois went very well. We had a great time with the kids and adults in the Bible club that met at the park in Sheffield. We spent a lot of time going door to door asking questions about the spiritual condition of the families in that town, and how they perceived relevance of God and the church their lives. The last two questions on our survey I found the most interesting.

In your opinion, is the church still relevant in today’s society? Most said yes, some said no. One asked, “What does relevant mean?” Webster says relevant means, “To bear upon, or relate to the matter at hand.” And, is synonymous with “applicable: to bear upon a particular problem.” One woman told us that the church was relevant to her, but wasn’t sure the rest of the country saw it that way any more. What about our church? Are we relevant? Are we making a difference in our community? Does it matter if we are here or not? I pray it does. We are relevant if we preach salvation to a lost world, we are relevant if we help families in time of need to address real problems, we are relevant if we bring peace and healing to a hurting world.

The last question we asked people was, “In your opinion, how can a person know for certain that they will go to heaven?” I was shocked by how few people, even church goers felt you could know for certain you had eternal life. John answered that question for us in 1 John 5:13, “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life.” Have you believed in Jesus as your Savior and Lord?

If yes, then stop living in doubt and fear and live and serve confidently, knowing nothing in this world can take you out of the Father’s hand.

Have a wonderful end to your summer,
Pastor Kirk
